The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), as the owner and operator of the oldest subway system in the nation, launched the Fairmount Commuter Rail Rehabilitation Project to update the existing infrastructure along the nine-mile long corridor, which is the only commuter rail line located exclusively in the City of Boston and extending from South Station through Dorchester and Hyde Park.
The Morton Street Station required renovation and accessibility upgrades through full-length high-level platforms, improved lighting and signage, ramps, and accessible parking spaces.
Oldcastle Precast manufactured 16,000 square feet of precast concrete rail platform for the Morton Street Station renovation. Each of the (47) forty-seven precast platform sections were approximately 10 foot by 32 foot. Due to the location of the station, at a curve on the rail line, each platform slab or section was cast with a curved edge to match the radius of the rail. Since platforms are on both sides of the rail, half of the slabs had a “convex” curve, while the other half had a “concave” curve.
“All told, we have completed (8) eight stations like this, and have (3) three more on the books to be cast this year, using this type of “Double-T” product. We have completed many, many more stations for the MBTA using other “types” of precast as well, such as slab-beam and slab-pier construction.” stated Matt Gilmore, Sales Representative for Oldcastle Precast, Inc. of Rehoboth, MA.
The Fairmount improvements project recently received a “high” rating from the Environmental Justice Committee of the Boston MPO. The project will increase transit access and improve service in Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan track improvements.
