NOVEMBER 2012: New Jersey - No damage reported to the four newly completed 148 foot tall temporary communications towers, fastened to ground-level precast concrete foundations, near Newark, NJ. One national carrier was the lead carrier to build the temporary sites that are shared by four carriers. All sites were completed by October 15th just prior to Hurricane Sandy. Sandy, a super storm comprised of a hurricane and nor’easter, came ashore Oct. 29 in southern New Jersey, devastating huge portions of that state and New York City.
The towers were constructed using precast concrete block foundations supplied by Oldcastle Precast, known as Cell Blocks®. Cell Blocks are a precast, post-tensioned foundation system that utilizes CELL BLOCKS Inc.’s patented post tensioned precast concrete block technology. When the foundation was complete a 148’ monopole was installed and anchored on top of it. The temporary towers were required so that antennas could be removed from existing transmission towers that were being replaced. The transmission infrastructure project was part of a 45 mile upgrade.
Oldcastle Precast manufactured the non-penetrating foundation system at its Telford, PA precast facility and shipped them to the New Providence, Watchung, Chatham, and Livingston, New Jersey sites. With wind speeds of up to 80 mph at the peak of the storm along the coast, these foundations were tested beyond any conditions experienced since the first installation in California in 2001.
