State Road to Interstate

Dissipaters are capable of reducing velocities up to 68% and are designed to be fish passable
State Road to Interstate, Oldcastle Precast Pipe-Helps Carry the Heavy Load

Lycoming is an isolated rural county in northern central Pennsylvania, known as the “Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. This 50 Mile stretch is the home of 3 State Parks, 2 national parks and 7 Lakes.

This part of central Pennsylvania comes under the authority of PennDOT, Dictrict 3-0 (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Within this jurisdiction lie 4,300 miles of state highway and 2900 bridges and includes 9 of Pennsylvania’s 67 Counties.

S.R. 6015 (US Rt. 15) is just part of this 5th largest state owned highway system. S.R. 6015, a once two lane road, winding through the scenic hills of north central Pennsylvania will soon be transformed into Interstate 99. This Ultra Modern highway will be able to carry the ever growing vehicle demand of residents, travelers and commerce. Presently the only interstate is I-80, located 60 miles to the south, and future I-86 (RT 17), which is located to the north, in the state of New York.  The new Interstate 99 will soon connect these two main arterial highways and eventually be part of an Interstate that runs from the Canadian to the Mexican borders.

Location and condition would require Oldcastle to once again work intimately with PennDOT Design, to resolve many of the unique issues associated with this project—deep fill and water exit velocities were just two of them.  Oldcastle utilized all four of its Northeast locations to meet the unique product requirements of this project. Heavy wall pipe for deep fill applications is nothing new for Oldcastle Pipe but Energy Dissipaters is one of Oldcastle NE newer offerings. Energy Dissipaters greatly reduce exit velocities of storm run-off and help to prevent washout and scour in sloped applications.

Oldcastle provided PennDOT District 3 with pipe for all phases of construction preformed on this roadway since the early 1990’s.  Marie Turner Inc., Oldcastle Precast Pipe’s distributor in this region was the minority supplier to Trumbull Corporation on this Lycoming County Project. Trumbull Corporation is one of the few area contractors that could handle a job of this size. Trumbull Corporation opened in 1955 and has grown into one of the premier contractors in the country with over two billion dollars in heavy highway construction.
